SB1728 was passed by the Texas Senate and will have a public hearing in the House Transportation Committee this coming Tuesday, May 11. If passed, EV owners will be charged $200-to-250 per year -- by the state's own calculation, two-to-three times what a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle would pay.
NOW IS THE TIME TO LET THE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE KNOW YOUR VIEW ON THIS BILL!
We're asking all EV owners to make a public comment to the Transportation Committee here BEFORE Tuesday morning: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c470
A polite, firm comment will be better received than a rant.
As to an amount to advocate for, that's up to you.
- Texas' analysis recommended $100 / year
- Our analysis suggests $80 / year is equivalent to what most Tesla-owners were paying when we owned ICE cars.
- Short-range EV owners may want to advocate for $60 / year or even less.
Although there are certainly arguments to be made for no EV road tax for environmental and other reasons, our view is those arguments will be less effective than those asking for a fair road tax.
