The long-awaited refreshes to the Model S and Model X were finally released. The exterior changes were modest and both the two older models in line with the newer Model 3 and Model Y. Meanwhile, the interior changes were a bit more radical and I am sure will cause some debate. We also saw the introduction of the Plaid+ models using the new battery cell technology. Details are still a bit light but deliveries will start in March.
Much like the original S, I've ordered one sight-unseen, so I'll report back details as the adventure unfolds.
Here's how I describe the Plaid Model S to people: I can’t imagine going from 0 to 60 in 1.99 seconds, because I have never been accelerated at that rate (13.4 m/s^2). For comparison, the California Screaming rollercoaster (now Incredicoaster) goes 0 to 55 in 4.5 seconds per Wikipedia. The Plaid Tesla Model S will go 0 to 60 in 1.99 seconds (Plaid, not Plaid+ coming out next year), which is more than TWICE as fast as California Screaming. My previous Tesla Model S 100D (6/28/2017) went 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds, which was ridiculously fun, but many cars can do that. But NO production vehicle (generally defined as more than 50 built AND legal to drive on public streets) has EVER been made that goes 0 to 60 in under 2 seconds. Someone could spend $4,000,000 on the top model Bugatti Chiron, then pull up to a stop light next to the Plaid, and the Plaid would beat it to 60 miles per hour, and to the 1/4 mile line, any time, any day, in any conditions. The Bugatti takes 2.3 seconds to get to 60 mph. And practically the only thing that’s going to wear out on the Plaid is the tires. It’s INSANE!!!
We’re super excited about our new Model S and X! Can’t wait to have them in our showrooms for test drives!
